Rob: Why’d you have to tell her about the store?
Barry: Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t know it was classified information. I mean, I know we don’t have any customers, but I thought that was a bad thing, not like, a business strategy [smacks Rob]

Tratto dall’omonimo libro di Nick Hornby, Alta fedeltà racconta la storia di Rob (John Cusack) trentenne proprietario di uno scalcinato negozio di dischi di Chicago (nel libro, Londra) che è appena stato lasciato dalla ragazza (convivente) Laura (Iben Hiejle).

[first lines] Rob: What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?

Rob si nasconde nella musica (nell’ambito possiede una conoscenza enciclopedica) per sfuggire all’inconcludenza della sua vita, che sembra essersi esaurita nell’arco di cinque solenni fregature d’amore, che costituiscono la sua top-five list in materia.

Rob: It would be nice to think that since I was 14, times have changed. Relationships have become more sophisticated. Females less cruel. Skins thicker. Instincts more developed. But there seems to be an element of that afternoon in everything that’s happened to me since. All my romantic stories are a scrambled version of that first one.

Dopo l’ennesimo abbandono da parte di Laura, Rob decide di capire come mai il suo ruolo sembra essere sempre quello della persona lasciata da parte, e nel corso della sua indagine svolgerà un lavoro di autocritica nei propri confronti, grazie al quale arriverà a realizzare molte cose.

Il film regge e la commedia risulta carina e piacevole, però non si avvicina nemmeno ai risultati del libro. Ho trovato inoltre un po’ fastidiosa, almeno inizialmente, la scelta di far parlare in prima persona Rob, che si rivolge ogni due per tre alla telecamera, rendendo un po’ artificiose le scene in cui questo accade.
